I still remember during my childhood when Domino’s Pizza had first opened in Dehradun, a cousin of mine reviewed it as the worst taste ever. He supported his motion by saying that even his dog rejected whatever he gave him from the box. I didn’t believe him. Years later, I had reached tenth standard and my immense love for Pizza had begun. At the time, I was so much in love with Domino’s Pizza that I practically ate 2 medium pizzas at a single meal. I loved it, the oregano, the cheese, everything. But what happened yesterday and the consequent realisation now forces me to forbid myself to ever eat from that place. Why, is it you’re wondering? Well, let the words roll…
So, it all started when my brother watched an advertisement on the TV for the new Lebanese Rolls from Domino’s Pizza. He said he wanted to try them, I agreed and in the evening we went to savour our mouths with flavours, if not from, then maybe similar to those in Lebanon. As soon as the Order Counter blinked 223 with the beeping sound, a sound which would irritate a normal person to the point that he destroys the place to utter debris in a normal situation but this was different, I was excited, my brother was maybe excited, I still am waiting if he’ll comment on this.
Imagine a 5-year old kid, waiting in the sun for the Ice Cream Truck that passes everyday. Suddenly from a distant area not to be seen with naked eyes, a bell chimes Ding Dong. Imagine the excitement that flows over his face, that was the excitement I had when my brother was bringing the two boxes to our table. We opened the box, Veg first and that is where things started moving downhill.
The aroma was not different and strictly NOT Lebanese at all, it was the same aroma that everything from Domino’s Pizza gives, the same Oregano, everything was just so same. “Okay” I thought to myself, “maybe it tastes different.” As soon as I took a bite, I knew what had happened. The flavour was the same Taco Indiana which Domino’s so blatantly says is Mexican, a statement that I am now confirmed is a lie. The same flavour went through my throat and the expressions can be predicted, I suppose. Both of us were pissed, I was more because I had yet again realised a reality (Forgive the pun) that my elder brother had always told me and I had always denied it. The problem was that yet again, I realised it myself and that too a little late.
This is what Domino’s has been doing since the last few years. The Garlic Breadsticks, the Stuffed Garlic Breadsticks, the Pizzas, the Tacos, the Lebanese Rolls, the Whatever-I’m-Forgetting has the same taste. The same smelly oregano, the same weird cheese, the same suffocating aroma.
Undoubtedly, this is a fact. Domino’s Pizza India has made it a point to add things such as Mexican, Lebanese to their menu and claim that the flavours are actually exotic. They lie. The flavour was same, it remains the same and perhaps, will forever be the same.
So, with that little story, I hereby declare, “I will never eat from Domino’s Pizza again. Period.”
